EU EMISSIONS TRADING SYSTEM

Emissions trading is EU's joint tool to reduce climate emissions. The EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) consists of to two separate trading systems: 

  • General Emissions Trading (ETS1): in operation since 2005 covering installations maritime and aviation sectors
  • Emissions Trading for Fuels (ETS2): emissions trading for fuel released for consumption will be phased in gradually from 2025 onwards

The Energy Authority is Finland’s national emissions trading authority responsible for permits, registers and supervision, as well as for the auctioning of emissions allowances. It also approves emissions trading verifiers. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) is responsible for emissions trading regarding air traffic and maritime in Finland.

Emissions in Finland’s emissions trading sector increased by 0.7 million tonnes in 2021

Total emissions of Finnish installations within the scope of the EU’s emissions trading system were 20.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2021. Emissions increased by 3.8 per cent from 2020.
